Jules A. Hoffmann (France) is Distinguished Class Research Director at CNRS (Emeritus), Institute of Molecular and Cellular Biology in Strasbourg; Visiting Professor at the University of Strasbourg; former President of the French National Academy of Sciences, Institut de France.
Luciano Maiani (Italy) is President of the National Research Council (CNR), Rome; Professor of Theoretical Physics at the University La Sapienza, Rome; former President of the National Institute of Nuclear Physics, Rome; former Director General of the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), Geneva; Fellow of the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei, Rome.
Victor Stoichita (Romania/Spain/Switzerland): Chair of Modern and Contemporary Art History at the University of Fribourg, Switzerland; Visiting Professor at the Istituto di studi italiani, University of Lugano.
Working within the Prize Foundation in Milan, the Balzan General Prize Committee is composed of twenty members of international renown from all over Europe; it establishes the subject areas for the awards and decides on the winners from among the nominations entered by the world's most important international cultural institutions - universities, research institutes and academies - at the Foundation's request.
THE BALZAN PRIZEWINNERS 2011 TO BE ANNOUNCED ON 5 SEPTEMBER
The Prizewinners of the four Balzan Prizes 2011 for
- Ancient History (The Graeco-Roman World)
- Enlightenment Studies
- Theoretical Biology or Bioinformatics
- The Early Universe (From the Planck Time to the First Galaxies) will be officially announced in Milan 5 September.
The award fields vary each year and can be related to either a specific or an interdisciplinary field, and look to go beyond the traditional subjects both in the humanities (literature, the moral sciences and the arts) and in the sciences (medicine and the physical, mathematical and natural sciences), so as to give priority to innovative research. Half of the amount received by the winner of each of the four prizes must be destined for research work, preferably involving young scholars and researchers.
The amount of each of the four Balzan Prizes will be 750.000 Swiss Francs.
