NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwired - March 13, 2014) - Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a highly common condition among men, but the stigma remains and many men are too embarrassed about erection problems to seek proper medical counsel. The practice of self-diagnosing and ordering ED drugs online is dangerous and all too common. Now the FDA has issued a warning about the hidden ingredients found in many of the top ED sex drugs ordered online.

J. Francois Eid, MD, world-renowned sexual dysfunction and penile implant expert, encourages men to talk openly with their doctors about ED symptoms. Most important, men should never take non-prescription drugs that claim to treat ED or enhance sexual performance, such as Bali Mojo, JINQIANGBUDOR Red Dragon, SexRx, Tiger King, and Vimax. According to the FDA, these supplements sold online and in some retail stores contain the hidden ingredients sildenafil and tadalafil.

“ED is an understandably heavy concern for men and the majority of patients achieve very positive results with prescription medications such as Viagra, Cialis, and Levitra,” explained Dr. Eid. “Unfortunately, men see certain ingredients in the online supplements and think they’re getting the same thing a doctor would prescribe.”

Sildenafil and tadalafil are both active ingredients in prescription ED medications, but the manufacturing of most sex supplements is completely unregulated. Further, without a medical consultation men have no way of knowing which ingredients are compatible with medications they’re already taking or their preexisting health conditions.

Dangerous sex supplements, counterfeit Viagra

“Dangerous drug interactions and other risky side effects are highly likely with unreliable sources,” said Dr. Eid. “Even online medications labeled as Viagra or Cialis may be counterfeit. There’s a reason these websites don’t require prescriptions; health fraud is a very dangerous practice.”

In 2012, a Urology Times study reported that 90 percent of online Viagra pills sold without a prescription were counterfeit and a large percentage were manufactured in highly unsanitary conditions with harmful ingredients.

“At the very least, men are wasting money and time with sex supplements, at most they’re putting their lives on the line. With a simple, in-office consultation I can start patients on an effective ED treatment regimen. ED treatment is not embarrassing in my office; it’s safe and successful,” said Dr. Eid.
