CEOs Share Breakthroughs, Insights and Opportunities at “Think Asia, Think Hong Kong” Symposium

Los Angeles, CA, August 22, 2019 – Could the next big breakthroughs in medical research – the innovations that move us towards cures for cancer and blindness – emerge from Asia?

The chief executives of five fast-growing Hong Kong-based companies innovating in these and other areas of biomedicine and technology will deliver the latest insights from their research and development (R&D) at the Think Asia, Think Hong Kong (TATHK) Symposium, to be held on September 20 at the JW Marriott in downtown Los Angeles.

The free-to-attend symposium, organized by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), will be joined by more than 1,500 attendees. The conference has the theme “The Future is Now: Riding the Wave of Health Innovations” and will feature the following speakers:

• Dr Stanley Sy, CEO of Sanomics, will share his company’s work to revolutionize cancer treatments using safe and efficient liquid-based and tissue-based genomic tests and to help doctors provide personalized cancer solutions;

• Prof John Luk, CEO of Arbele, focuses on immunotherapy for cancers, immune disorders and neurological disease. The company uses its facilities, which include an R&D center in Seattle, to focus on antibody-based therapeutic platforms while leveraging new genome-editing technology;

• Dr Kenny Lai, CEO of RainsOptics, is a retinal imaging innovator who has developed an ultra-wide-field smartphone ophthalmoscope to help prevent blindness and promote eye health;

• Dr Langston Suen, CEO of Opharmic Technology (HK), develops ocular drug delivery technology and devices using patented non-invasive ultrasound-mediated technology; and

• Aldrin Yim, CEO of Codex Genetics, uses artificial intelligence (AI)-powered analytics on both genetic and clinical data to provide holistic, clinically actionable disease management solutions to patients suffering from neurological disorders or cancers.

The executives will participate in a panel discussion, “Why Biotech in Hong Kong?”, moderated by Prof John Kao, Head of the Biomedical Technology Cluster of the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation, which was launched in 2001 to incubate start-ups and advance Hong Kong as a regional hub for innovation and technology development.

Hong Kong is home to world-class scholars and research organizations that are working to fuel innovation in the global healthcare industry. Whether it’s next-generation genetic sequencing to identify at-risk populations, target-oriented precision medicines, point-of-care diagnostics, or the use of biosensors and trackers, this session will cover some of the disruptive breakthroughs emerging from Hong Kong’s healthcare and medical research communities, as well as exploring potential collaboration between U.S. and Hong Kong companies that can enable broader opportunities across the massive pan-Asian marketplace.

The symposium is being organized as part of “Think Asia, Think Hong Kong” – a one-day conference that aims to help businesses successfully enter and grow in the Asian marketplace. In addition to spotlighting health innovation and biotech, the conference will address the latest trends, developments and opportunities in fintech, legal services, design, smart living technologies and more.

The event will include thematic breakout sessions featuring globally prominent business leaders, entrepreneurs, designers, investors and service professionals along with a Hong Kong start-up showcase. One-on-one business consultations with Hong Kong professional service experts and business-matching meetings will be arranged throughout the day, in addition to exclusive networking opportunities for attendees.
