ST. LOUIS, Nov. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- A new device called TargetScan(TM), designed to improve the accuracy of brachytherapy treatments, earned accolades at the annual meeting for the American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology (ASTRO) held this past month in Denver. Developed by St. Louis-based Envisioneering Medical Technologies, TargetScan provides radiation oncologists with a stationary probe and enhanced 3-D imaging acquisition for improved seed-placement confidence and reduced procedure time.
At ASTRO, physicians examined the device intended to address the unmet needs of radiation oncologists, which include calls for a stationary probe to eliminate prostate movement while obtaining both sagittal and transverse image acquisition and the ability to deliver precise treatments to pre-planned target sites. ASTRO attendees also interacted with radiation oncologists who have clinically tested TargetScan, including Jeff Michalski, M.D., with Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, and Peter Grimm, D.O., of the Seattle Prostate Institute.
“I believe this device will become the new standard of care for mapping, targeting and treatment documentation, which is why I was so pleased that Envisioneering brought the device to ASTRO,” said Grimm. “What I appreciate most is the certainty TargetScan provides, knowing that my treatment deliveries are accurate and that I’ve done everything possible to help my patients.”
Other physician comments at ASTRO centered on the device’s imaging capabilities, which allow radiation oncologists to easily switch between sagittal and transverse scan planes. Compatible with other brachytherapy systems, physicians can simply transfer the stored images to treatment planning software.
“Once the probe is in place, you push a button and TargetScan does the rest,” added Michalski. “With TargetScan I have cut my procedure time, which improves my patients’ comfort level and is of paramount concern.”
TargetScan is currently undergoing a 900-patient clinical study led by the nation’s top hospitals including New York University and Washington University Schools of Medicine.
