CXR Biosciences Strengthens Mechanistic Toxicology And Industry Expertise With The Appointment Of Professor Brian Lake

Professor Brian G Lake, BSc, PhD, DSc, FBTS has joined CXR Biosciences as an Associate Toxicologist. CXR Biosciences offers tailored preclinical services in the areas of investigative and mechanistic toxicology, exploratory and discovery toxicology, PK and metabolism and dermal absorption. Using its collaborative approach and industry expertise, CXR works with clients of all sizes to solve issues relating to the safety of compounds or selection of research candidates. Professor Lake strengthens the existing industry team at CXR, and he will be responsible for supporting customer programs in his particular areas of expertise, for example mechanistic issues of the liver, thyroid or lung.

Professor Lake, a Fellow of the British Toxicology Society, obtained a BSc in Biochemistry from the University of Surrey and then a PhD in the field of induction of hepatic and extrahepatic xenobiotic metabolising enzymes. He also holds a DSc from the University of Surrey where he is a Visiting Professor in the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences. Professor Lake worked at BIBRA International for over 30 years and, subsequently, was head of the Leatherhead Food Research Molecular Sciences Department for over 10 years.

During his career he has been involved in a wide range of multi-disciplinary research and industry projects. His research fields and expertise are broadly in the areas of the metabolism and toxicity of xenobiotics in mammalian systems. Particular interests include xenobiotic metabolism and the induction of xenobiotic metabolising enzymes; the development of in vitro systems for predicting xenobiotic metabolism and toxicity; modes of action of non-genotoxic carcinogenesis and the extrapolation of animal data to human hazard assessment. He has published over 240 scientific papers and has acted as a consultant to various international companies. He is currently a member of the Committee on Toxicity of Chemicals in Food, Consumer Products and the Environment (COT).

Commenting on his appointment, Professor Lake stated: “I am delighted to be joining the existing scientific team at CXR Biosciences. CXR is already well known to the agrochemical, chemical, pharmaceutical and consumer products industries as the leading provider of mechanistic toxicology expertise and laboratory services. I look forward to working closely with CXR’s customers and toxicologists, using my experience of over 40 years of industrial problem solving, to help them resolve challenging mechanistic issues.”

Commenting on Professor Lake’s appointment, Michael Fort, Chief Executive of Concept Life Sciences said: “CXR Biosciences is already the leading provider of investigative toxicology services to the life sciences industry. I am delighted to welcome an industrial scientist of Brian’s standing to the team, and we are actively looking to grow our expertise and range of services further through additional expert hires going forward.”
