Commercialisation of their impressive research output is a key goal of Edinburgh’s three universities, which collectively attract more than 40,000 students to the city.Edinburgh University, Scotland’s biggest, is one of the UK’s top-rated research institutions, offering more than 160 taught postgraduate programmes. It has created 47 companies from its research activities over the past five years, of which 37 are still trading. It is also involved in a strategic partnership with local health and development authorities to develop a £250m biomedical research park in the city, next to the university’s world-renowned medical school. The public/private partnership aims to create more than 5,000 jobs.
