CareFusion Corporation Expands Infusion Pump Interoperability

SAN DIEGO, June 20, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- CareFusion, a global medical device company, today announced an agreement to make bi-directional connectivity available between CareFusion’s Alaris® System and Epic’s electronic medical record (EMR) platform.

“This new relationship is an exciting step towards improving collaboration and connectivity between medical devices and information technology,” said Darren Dworkin, senior vice president for Enterprise Information Systems and chief information officer at Cedars-Sinai Health System, a large academic medical center consistently ranked among the top hospitals in the nation. “This type of integration helps to further transform HIT into a strategic tool to drive improvements to both patient care and safety.”

The companies intend to develop bi-directional capabilities to enable clinicians to remotely pre-populate infusion orders from the EMR to the Alaris® System, helping hospitals reduce the risk of harmful and costly intravenous (IV) medication errors that can occur during manual programming at the patient’s bedside. This enhanced interface is being developed to help health care providers improve clinician workflow and increase efficiency by reducing manual or duplicative documentation that can occur through disparate systems.

“In the evolving health care landscape, interoperability between devices and information systems is among our customers’ most critical priorities,” said J.C. Kyrillos, senior vice president and general manager of CareFusion’s Infusion Systems business. “This agreement with Epic builds on recent progress we have made across CareFusion to improve device interoperability and represents yet another way CareFusion helps hospitals bridge the gap between medical devices and HIT systems.”
