Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO) Announces BIO International Convention Buzz of BIO Winners

WASHINGTON, D.C. (June 16, 2011) The Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO) is pleased to announce the Buzz of BIO winners for the 2011 BIO International Convention, being held in Washington, D.C. on June 27-30. BIO gave voters the opportunity to choose three buzzworthy new players in the industry with winners chosen in three categories: Healing, Fueling and Feeding.

“The Buzz of BIO is an exciting competition to help lend a voice to companies who are often overshadowed by the larger, more established organizations within the industry,” said Jim Greenwood, president and CEO of the Biotechnology Industry Organization. “As a Buzz winner, these emerging companies will now enter the International Convention with a heightened sense of anticipation and excitement among their industry peers.”

Buzz of BIO Winners include:

• Healing Winner – Amrita. Amrita Therapeutics develops new therapies and devices to combat public health threats such as cancers, and HIV/AIDS with fewer side-effects and at more affordable cost. Co-founder and biotech pioneer Ananda Chakrabartys novel science platform uses bacterial proteins and peptides with demonstrated effectiveness.

• Fueling Winner – OPXBio. OPXBIO is a Colorado-based company using its proprietary, leading EDGE (Efficiency Directed Genome Engineering) technology to manufacture renewable bio-based chemicals and fuels that are lower cost, higher return and more sustainable than existing petroleum-based options on the current market.

• Feeding Winner – Agrisoma. Agrisoma is using its proprietary chromosome engineering technology to create a new generation of crops for bio-energy and food, with enhanced performance, quality and environmental benefits.

Voting was open to the industry at large and during the five week contest, the competition received just over 1400 votes. The winners received free registration to the Convention as well as the opportunity to deliver a 15-minute presentation during the BIO Business Forum.
