Biotech Mergers Seen As Threat To U.S. Farmers

The U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee grilled executives of the “Big Six” biotech companies Tuesday about what Chairman Charles Grassley, R-Iowa, called a tsunami of mergers that lawmakers say eliminates competition and raises prices on American farmers.

Planned mergers involving U.S. biotech seed giants, such as Dow Chemical with Dupont/Pioneer and Monsanto with Bayer, could significantly increase seed costs for already struggling U.S. farmers, according to a study Sen. Ted. Cruz, R-Texas, entered Tuesday into the Congressional Record.
