September 08, 2011 -- Bioo Scientific received a small business (SBIR) grant for $150,000 from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to develop a new technology to detect petroleum contamination in seafood. This is a critical need as most currently used testing methods have been shown to be somewhat inaccurate and unreliable for the detection of potentially hazardous levels of carcinogen compounds introduced during oil spills in seafood. The new test methods developed with this funding will be cost-effective, reliable and sensitive tools to detect petroleum contaminants in seafood which will ensure the safety of the food and water supply.
According to Dr Joe Krebs, Bioo Scientific’s Director of Protein Engineering and Chemistry, “Analysis of food and environmental samples for petroleum contamination is a time-consuming process. Traumatic oil spills can push analytical capacity to its limit. Our research will develop new enzyme-based rapid test methods to increase the capacity to ensure that petroleum-contaminated samples do not enter the food supply.”
The recently launched MaxSignal® Benzo[a]pyrene ELISA Kit which is the first kit in Bioo Scientific product line to protect or food supply from oil spill contaminants. This kit facilitates the screening for benzo[a]pyrene (BaP), a carcinogenic component of oil, in fish, shrimp, meat and water samples.
