BioMedical Enterprises, Inc. Announces Allowance of Patent for Its OSSforce(TM) Implant Controller

SAN ANTONIO, March 29 /PRNewswire/ -- BioMedical Enterprises, Inc. (BME), a Texas Research Park-based company, today announced that it has received a Notice of Allowance from the United States Patent and Trademark Office for its patent application entitled, “System and Method for Force, Displacement and Rate Control of Shape Memory Material Implants.” A U.S. Patent relating to this Notice of Allowance will be granted after the Company pays the required fees. The allowed patent claims provide protection for BME’s innovative OSSforce(TM) Implant Controller technology.

The OSSforce(TM) Implant Controller gives surgeons control over BME’s OSStaple(TM) and OSSplate(TM) devices, both of which use the shape recovery properties of the nickel titanium alloy nitinol as a means of applying dynamic closing force during bone fusion. Nitinol devices are known to have a trained or programmed shape. These devices are implanted in their open configuration and return to their programmed closed configuration in situ after current applied by the OSSforce(TM) Implant Controller causes the implant to heat. Unique to the OSSforce(TM) Implant Controller is the ability for the surgeon to adjust both time and power settings in order to control the rate and extent of force applied across the bone fusion interface by the implants.

“We strongly believe the Notice of Allowance for these 61 claims confirms the unique nature of our technology and gives us a proprietary advantage in our strategy of developing bone healing devices that elicit a biological response,” said W. Casey Fox, PhD, P.E., chief executive of BME.
