Bio-images Celebrates 10 Years of Clinical Research with Healthy Outlook and Continuing Growth

September 12, 2011 -- Bio-Images Research, the Scottish life science company which has beaten the sector odds by remaining independent and innovative, and exhibiting continuous growth, is celebrating the 10th anniversary of the first of its many successful clinical trials.

The Glasgow-based experts in imaging drug delivery systems, founded as a University of Strathclyde spin-out in 2000, completed their first clinical study in September 2001, opening the door to a steady stream of business from some of the world’s biggest pharmaceutical companies.

Their first clinical trial used gamma scintigraphy to assess the residence time of pharmaceutical formulations in different regions of the eye in patients with dry eye syndrome, demonstrating Bio-Images’ capabilities in ophthalmic delivery, in addition to their expertise in the areas of oral, nasal and pulmonary drug delivery.

Bio-Images has been so successful that it is now taking its market-beating expertise into the heart of Asia by opening a facility in Singapore, a pharmaceutical hub, where it will square up to some of the industry’s most aggressive and competitive global and regional talent.

The continuing growth of Bio-Images, which operates from within Glasgow Royal Infirmary and has recently incorporated a sister formulation development company, DDi, is in sharp contrast to other ventures in Scotland’s fragile pharma sector, which has seen many hopefuls fail through lack of funding or, if successful, swallowed up by deep-pocketed multi-nationals.

Professor Howard Stevens, chairman and founder of Bio-Images Research, said: “The 10 years since our first clinical study have passed in a whirlwind of successful activity and it is a great tribute to the team that this small Scottish company is now number 2 in the world for using imaging techniques to trace the effectiveness of drug delivery systems in the body.”

In addition to their renowned scintigraphic imaging expertise and standing within the pharmaceutical community, Bio-Images Research also undertakes full trial management, including regulatory and ethical submissions. This comprehensive, expert service that has seen them establish a loyal global client base and buck the trend to continue to grow against the industry odds.
