TRAVERSE CITY, M.I., FOR RELEASE APRIL 7th, 2011 – Thompson MIS, the new minimally invasive spine division of Thompson Surgical Instruments, is announcing the market introduction of the BoneBac™ Press at the American Association of Neurological Surgeons Annual Conference in Denver next week.
The BoneBac Press™, a reusable device, will enable surgeons to more effectively utilize local autograft bone for fusion and reconstructive procedures. Designed by Michigan neurosurgeon, Mick Perez-Cruet M.D., the new device “significantly reduces or eliminates the need for additional bone extenders, reduces costs significantly, and improves fusion rates,” in his opinion because he is able to use the patient’s own bone.
To obtain autograft without the BoneBac™ Press, surgeons must harvest from undesirable locations such as the iliac crest or utilize disposable traps such as the Luken trap to collect local bone shavings.
“Luken traps fill with blood, make a mess, and if you’ve collected less than 2cc of bone, trying to separate the bone from the blood is very hard to do,” Perez-Cruet commented.
Patented technology in the BoneBac™ Press allows the surgeon to cleanly and efficiently separate the blood from the bone while reducing O.R. time. Additionally, the use of the BoneBac™ Press reduces the morbidity seen with iliac crest harvesting. By reducing or eliminating the need for allograft, extenders, and biologics, the BoneBac™ Press could save users anywhere from $500-$5000 per use depending on what type allograft, extender, or biologic, such as BMP, would have been needed in place of the local bone. The BoneBac™ Press could also reduce the risk associated with certain biologics for patients.
“During MIS TLIF’s we can collect bone from the laminectomy or facetectomy and use it in our implants or use it to fill the disc space.”
Perez-Cruet also uses the BoneBac™ Press for cervical and thoracic spine fusions. Autograft collected in the BoneBac™ Press can be combined with allograft or synthetic bone extenders and can potentially make the combination as effective as autograft alone. The BoneBac™ Press can be used by orthopedic surgeons, neurosurgeons, reconstructive plastic surgeons, ENT’s, oral surgeons, and for any operation where bone can be reused in the patient for reconstructive or fusion purposes.
