STEM CELLS(R) Names Renowned Scientists Associate Editors

DURHAM, N.C., Feb. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- The 25-year-old journal STEM CELLS(R) has named two world-renowned scientists as Associate Editors: Donald Phinney, Ph.D., of Tulane University, and Miodrag Stojkovic, Ph.D., of Centro de Investigacion Principe Felipe in Spain.

STEM CELLS(R) continues to experience stunning growth in the quality and quantity of research manuscripts submitted. In response to this “boom” over the past five years, STEM CELLS(R) has broadened its content, speeded electronic publishing, and increased the numbers of issues and articles per issue, as well as the manuscript rejection rate. The addition of Drs. Phinney and Stojkovic, who work closely with the Editor-in-Chief, Dr. Curt I. Civin, and three Senior Editors, will enhance the consistency and timeliness of the manuscript peer review process. Their devoted efforts will continue to bolster the impact of STEM CELLS(R) for our global readership.

Dr. Phinney is Associate Professor of Immunology and Microbiology at Tulane’s Center for Gene Therapy. His research investigates the basic biology of mesenchymal stem cells and their potential use for treatment of chronic lung disease and disorders of the central nervous system. His studies have spurred preclinical trials to evaluate the safety and efficacy of intracranial stem cell transplantation for the treatment of neurological sequelae resulting from lysosomal storage diseases. “As Associate Editor, I am committed to help maintain STEM CELLS(R) high standards and ensure its continued publication of quality manuscripts that impact the field of stem cell research.”

In September 2006, a team led by Professor Stojkovic announced the derivation of pluripotent human embryonic stem cells (hESC) from nonviable early human embryos that had stopped their cleavage. This progress, published in STEM CELLS(R), encourages other scientists to use the technique, which uses surplus and donated embryos, to understand and fight debilitating diseases. “I’m very delighted about my new post as Associate Editor, and one of my major goals will be to help STEM CELLS(R) achieve an even greater Impact Factor.”
