Plymouth, MN (PRWEB) July 29, 2013 -- Rotation Medical Inc., a Minnesota-based medical device company developing a technology to treat rotator cuff disease, today announced the appointment of Martha Shadan as President and Chief Executive Officer. An industry veteran who has held senior executive positions at leading medical device companies including Zimmer and Covidien, Ms. Shadan brings more than three decades of marketing and commercialization expertise to the company’s executive team.

“This is a very exciting time to join Rotation Medical,” said Ms. Shadan. “Rotator cuff disease is an area of significant unmet clinical need, and the team has developed a minimally invasive technology with the potential to shift the treatment paradigm. The clinical results to date are extremely promising, and I believe the benefits this technology can provide may lead to a new standard of care for patients suffering from rotator cuff disease.”

In conjunction with Ms. Shadan’s appointment, co-founder Tom Westling has been named Chairman of the Board and Chief Operating Officer. Mr. Westling served as CEO since co-founding Rotation Medical in 2009.

“I am very proud of what we have built here at Rotation, and I look forward to working with Martha as the company begins an exciting new chapter in its growth,” said Mr. Westling. “Martha brings the right leadership at the right time, and her strong sales and marketing acumen will be an invaluable asset on our path to commercial success.”

About Rotation Medical

Rotation Medical was founded in 2009 with a mission to significantly advance the treatment of rotator cuff disease. The company is developing a minimally invasive rotator cuff implant intended to provide a new treatment option for patients with small tears and improve the treatment of patients with large tears. Its lead investor is New Enterprise Associates (NEA).

About the Rotation Medical Implant System

The foundation of the Rotation Medical Implant System is a collagen scaffold which is affixed to the affected rotator cuff tendon using three easy-to-use, proprietary instrument systems currently being developed and tested for use in both arthroscopic and mini-open procedures. Rotation Medical’s collagen scaffold offers a new surgical option to directly treat the torn and/or degenerated tendon for patients with small rotator cuff tears and the opportunity to add a layer of protection for larger tear procedures. Use of the collagen scaffold to reinforce the tendon suggests the potential for achieving a more durable solution. In December of 2011, Rotation Medical’s collagen scaffold was cleared by the FDA for use in the management and protection of tendon injuries in which there has been no substantial loss of tendon tissue.

About Rotator Cuff Disease

Over 19 million people suffer from chronic shoulder pain, and more than one million are treated surgically each year. Most of these patients suffer from rotator cuff disease in which degenerative changes often lead to rotator cuff tears. Tears that start out small, over time, often develop into a larger tear due to continuing degeneration of the torn tendon and larger tears have a very high likelihood of re-tearing after repair.

Caution: The Rotation Medical implant device is a 510(k) cleared product that is not yet available in the United States.
