PRINCETON, NJ--(Marketwired - January 14, 2014) -

PeriGen, Inc.

WHAT:
Renowned obstetrics (OB) physician experts Thomas J. Garite, M.D., editor emeritus of the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology (AJOG), director of research and education for Obstetrics at Pediatrix Medical Group, and chief clinical officer of PeriGen, and Emily Hamilton, MD CM, FRCSC, FACOG, adjunct professor, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, and senior vice president of Clinical Research at PeriGen, will be featured presenters at the 2014 Steamboat Perinatal Conference in Steamboat Springs, Colo.

Topics:
Dr. Garite’s presentation titled “Putting the M Back in MFM: Who Will Do the Critical Care of the OB Patient?” examines how maternal fetal medicine started as a subspecialty of obstetrics to provide care to women with complicated pregnancies, but has now evolved into a specialty that more often emphasizes outpatient care, prenatal diagnosis with ultrasound and genetic diagnosis. This has left a void in labor and delivery, where trained and experienced doctors are often unavailable to take care of mothers with severe medical and OB complications. This presentation will review the reasons, the impact and potential solutions.

Dr. Hamilton’s presentation titled “Heart Rate Variability: Is It All It’s Cracked Up to Be?” traces the historical evolution of medical opinion regarding the high reliability of heart rate variability to exclude significant acidemia, and presents contemporary evidence challenging this conclusion. Discussed are an in-depth examination of the physiological control of heart rate variability, and recent research observations showing that a baseline variability of greater than 5 bpm does not reliably exclude the presence of metabolic acidosis.
