Janssen Healthcare Innovation Announces Discharge Decision Support System (D2S2) Winner of the Janssen Connected Care Challenge

SAN DIEGO, May 23, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Janssen Healthcare Innovation, a team within Janssen Research & Development, LLC (Janssen), today announced Discharge Decision Support System (D2S2) is the winner of the crowdsourcing-inspired Janssen Connected Care Challenge and the $100,000 prize. D2S2 is a discharge decision support system that uses a proprietary algorithm to assemble and score key data upon hospital admission in order to identify patients who should be referred to post-acute care services to reduce the risk of 30-day readmissions.

A panel of external judges with expertise in care transitions and business formation selected D2S2 as the winner from over 100 submissions to the Challenge. Kimberly Park, Founding Partner of Janssen Healthcare Innovation, presented the $100,000 prize today to Eric Heil of RightCare Solutions, developer of D2S2, at the Wireless Health Convergence Summit in San Diego, California.

“The Janssen Connected Care Challenge judges were impressed with all of our finalists for presenting well-conceived care transition proposals and identified the D2S2 system as having the highest potential to improve care transitions,” said Ms. Park. “D2S2 brings innovation to discharge planning by introducing standardization into the admissions process, which is highly variable.”

The prize money will support the build-out of the D2S2 software and a pilot at four hospitals that have committed to participate. The team is also developing a second generation tool that will be able to identify “Where to refer?” such as home care, skilled nursing facility, rehabilitation, or nursing home for a patient at high-risk for 30-day readmissions.

“We are honored to receive the top prize of the Janssen Connected Care Challenge for D2S2,” said Eric Heil of RightCare Solutions. “We are looking forward to applying the award to further advance our product and ultimately improve patient care.”

Janssen collaborated with National Transitions of Care Coalition (NTOCC) to design the evaluation criteria for the submissions as well as identify physicians and business professionals to serve as judges.

“D2S2 was the stand-out solution because of its potential usability by healthcare professionals, effectiveness to improve patient outcomes, and reach to enable broad adoption,” said Cheri Lattimer, Executive Director of NTOCC, who served as a judge. “The volume and variety of contest submissions we reviewed illustrates entrepreneurs’ tremendous creativity to address this vital issue and the critical need to improve care interventions.”

The Janssen Connected Care Challenge finalists and winner retain all intellectual property rights to their submitted proposals. The three finalist teams Cara Health, Care Rocket, and D2S2 each were recognized with a $50,000 award and presented their ideas to the judges at Demo Day on Thursday, May 10, 2012 in New York City. Videos of the presentations are available online.

The challenge was announced earlier this year at the first ever Care Innovations Summit, a conference co-hosted by the Center for Medicare & Medicaid Innovation, The West Wireless Health Institute, and Health Affairs in collaboration with the Office of the National Coordinator at Health & Human Services.
