Henry Ford Health System To Open Medical Center In Harbortown

DETROIT, May 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Reinforcing its commitment to the city of Detroit, Henry Ford Health System announced today plans to open a new medical center in the city’s east riverfront district.

Henry Ford Medical Center-Harbortown will be located at 3370 Jefferson, just west of Belle Isle, in the Harbortown retail complex. Henry Ford will lease a 7,500-square-foot property previously occupied by an ACO Hardware.

Construction and renovation, estimated at $1 million, begins this summer. The medical center is slated to open by the end of the year.

Nancy Schlichting, Henry Ford president and CEO, says the new medical center is part of the health system’s overall primary care strategy to expand care to growing areas of the city and metro Detroit.

“With a shortage of primary care services in the city, we believe Henry Ford Medical Center-Harbortown meets a need for providing high-quality care for adults close to home so they don’t have to go outside the city for their care,” Schlichting says.

“This also reinforces our commitment to the city. Henry Ford has been part of Detroit for more than nine decades and we plan to continue our investment in the city for years to come.”

Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick says the center is “yet another example of Henry Ford Health System’s unwavering commitment to the city of Detroit.”

“Investment in health care is vital to grow Detroit and this center will strengthen the services available to citizens,” Kilpatrick says.

The medical center will offer adult internal medicine, lab and radiology services, as well as acupuncture, yoga and massage therapy. Group patient visits also will be available -- a concept that drew raves from patients during a pilot program at the Clinic at Henry Ford Hospital.

Lynette Davenport, M.D., a senior staff physician since August 1999, will be the physician in charge. Dr. Davenport, a Harvard Medical School graduate who trained at the Cleveland Clinic, and administrative manager Joe Ellen Skutt, R.N., MHA, will oversee a staff of 25 employees once fully operational.

“I’m excited about this opportunity to lead our new medical center,” Dr. Davenport says. “Patients can expect to receive the high quality, compassionate care for which Henry Ford is known. They also will have access to our expert specialized care and unique programs if needed.”

Henry Ford Medical Center-Harbortown represents the first new primary care-based medical center to open in the metro area since the late 1990s. It will be the fourth medical center in the city of Detroit -- the others being at Henry Ford Hospital, Detroit Northwest and Detroit East.
