The new computerized medication dispensing units are from Omnicell , a leading provider of patient safety solutions preferred by nurses.
The closed, locked systems, which have built-in password protection for security, keep track of all drugs added or taken from the units. Guiding lights help direct nurses to the right bin with the correct dose when preparing medications for patients.
“The reduction of medication errors by using lighted drawers for assuring the right dose increases patient safety,” said Woods. “The new computerized systems reduce lost charges that are an inevitable part of a manual system.”
These units are located in the emergency room, where quick retrieval of medication is essential. The hospital has plans to expand to other areas of the hospital in the future.
