Express Scripts Commends Release Of Medicare Drug Benefit Regulations Affirming Value Of Pharmacy Benefit Management Tools

ST. LOUIS, Jan. 25 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Express Scripts, Inc. today commended the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) upon the release of final regulations for implementation of Part D of the Medicare Modernization Act, which affirm the value of pharmacy benefit management tools.

“Critical to the success of Part D will be the deployment of pharmacy benefit management tools already proven effective in safely managing drug costs in the commercial sector. We strongly support the cost-lowering competition that will accompany the right-sized drug formularies and retail pharmacy networks permitted by the regulations,” said Barrett Toan, chairman and chief executive officer of Express Scripts.

“CMS clearly listened carefully to the widespread input it received, especially from those interested in making the use of prescription drugs safer and more affordable for America’s seniors. The regulations will go a long way toward expediting Part D implementation by both employers and plans,” said Toan. He indicated that the company continues to review the regulations as it evaluates its direct participation in the program.

“The regulations give employers a practical process for continuing to provide Medicare eligible beneficiaries with prescription benefit coverage. Express Scripts looks forward to working closely with employers and plans supporting their participation in Part D,” added Toan.
