ST. LOUIS, September 12 /PRNewswire/ -- A recent survey conducted with physicians across the US who use MD Consult, Elsevier’s family of online clinical information services for medical professionals, found the web-based resource significantly improves their productivity, aids with quicker, more accurate diagnoses, and helps them stay abreast of the latest medical findings.
According to the survey, MD Consult saved physicians 2.3 hours per week on average and allowed them to answer questions more quickly in 61% of their cases. One hundred percent of those surveyed said MD Consult keeps them more current within their specialties and with best practices.
Dr. David Pierce of Beaverton, OR, said of MD Consult, “It’s hard to practice medicine now without it...In the old days you had to rummage through multiple books and call a consultant to get the latest information. But I don’t have to do that now - I just go to MD Consult.”
The survey also proved that MD Consult is an especially useful tool for improving patient care. One hundred percent of physicians surveyed said the service offers more accurate assessments, effective diagnosis and better solutions for patients. Physicians said the use of MD Consult has led to better patient care in 29% of their cases.
In addition to the survey, MD Consult conducted case studies to determine the value the service brings to two Texas medical centers. By using MD Consult, Medical City Dallas Hospital will realize a projected five-year net benefit of more than $5 million, and an annual return on investment (ROI) of 3776%. The financial benefits included increases in the number of patients seen per week, a reduction in the cost of interlibrary loans, and an increase in librarian productivity.
Even more important than the financial benefits is the impact on patient care. In one instance, a patient in an operating room suffered complications due to a little-known drug interaction. The Medical City librarian was contacted from surgery and within minutes found information on MD Consult about the interaction and how to combat it. Using the information, the anesthesiologist was able to solve the medical emergency.
