SEATTLE, July 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Doctors for Medical Liability Reform (DMLR), a leading coalition of over 230,000 medical specialists dedicated to national medical liability reform, continued their aggressive, multi-million dollar campaign in Washington State advocating the passage of national medical liability reform, which is currently blocked in the U.S. Senate by a handful of Senators, including Sen. Patty Murray and Sen. Maria Cantwell.
The Protect Patients Now in Washington campaign has already connected with thousands of citizens throughout the state, and today its 30-minute newsmagazine will begin airing across the state on both network and cable television. The message in the newsmagazine is clear: Washington State is facing an access-to-healthcare crisis of epic proportions, preventing injured patients and expecting mothers from receiving the critical care that they need.
Dr. Steve Klein, co-chairman of Protect Patients Now in Washington, is witnessing the crisis first-hand and hopes that candidates for the U.S. Senate will recognize the effect it is having on healthcare.
“This is a historic campaign effort,” Klein said. “Medical liability reform is a defining issue for doctors and the number one issue facing the medical community. The coalition represents a historic effort by the medical community to impact the political process.”
Other components of the campaign will include print and radio ads, directly targeting those who can change the course of Washington’s healthcare system, U.S. Senate candidate George Nethercutt, Republican, and Senator Patty Murray, Democrat.
Nethercutt has signed the DMLR pledge to protect patients now and would vote for a reasonable cap on non-economic damages if he is elected to the Senate. In fact, as a U.S. Congressman, Nethercutt voted for a bill that passed meaningful medical liability reform, but the bill was blocked in the U.S. Senate by a handful of Democratic Senators.
Senator Murray has not signed the DMLR pledge to protect patients now. In fact, she has continuously voted against even discussing medical liability reform on the floor of the U.S. Senate.
