Blue Shield Of California Announces New Business Structure

SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Blue Shield of California today announced a revised organizational structure that will bring new responsibilities to several key executives. The changes coincide with the decision by chief operating officer Ken Wood to leave the company at the end of the year.

Senior vice president of Consumer Operations Bob Novelli has been promoted to the newly created position of executive vice president, Customer Services and Corporate Marketing, effective October 1, 2005. Novelli will continue to lead consumer operations, while adding oversight of the company's consumer experience and producer experience teams. He will report to chairman & CEO Bruce Bodaken.

Novelli started with Blue Shield in 2002 as senior vice president of Consumer Operations, where he has managed more than 2,500 employees in the company's call center and claims operations. He also oversees the company's e-business initiatives.

As part of the new organizational structure, Paul Markovich, senior vice president, Large Group Business Unit, will add to his responsibilities the Ancillary Business Unit, which distributes vision, dental, and life insurance products.

Wood joined Blue Shield in 1995 as the company's first chief marketing officer. He was appointed chief operating officer by Bodaken in 2000. Over the past decade, Blue Shield has become the state's third largest health plan and has recorded increasingly strong financial performance. Wood's leadership resulted in the development of Access+HMO, transforming the role of a health plan into one that empowers consumers to actively manage their own health and wellness.

"Ken has had a major impact at Blue Shield, bringing an innovative approach and strong business acumen to our company's operations. His operational expertise and knowledge of the healthcare industry contributed greatly to our success," said Bodaken.

Founded in 1939, Blue Shield of California is one of the state's leading healthcare companies. Headquartered in San Francisco, the not-for-profit corporation has more than 3.3 million members, 4,300 employees and more than 20 office locations throughout California.
