WASHINGTON, June 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Karen Ignagni, President and CEO of America’s Health Insurance Plans (AHIP) released the following statement regarding today’s Supreme Court ruling.
“Today’s ruling by The Supreme Court of the United States represents a victory for consumers and employers who otherwise faced the prospect of higher health care costs without added benefit. The ruling puts the brakes on efforts by trial lawyers to turn every question about the scope of an individual’s coverage into a costly lawsuit.
“Under the law known as ERISA, consumers have recourse to challenge health care coverage decisions but don’t need to go to court to do so. The Supreme Court decision preserved that avenue without encouraging more lawsuits, which would have unnecessarily put coverage for more workers at risk.
“There is already far too great a reliance on using the courts to resolve disputes in health care, a practice that has had great consequences for the fabric of our health care system. We will continue to support existing alternative approaches for consumers to solve their disputes fairly and quickly, and in ways that promote access, affordability, and quality care.”
