AMES, Iowa, May 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Advanced Analytical Technologies, Inc. (AATI), based in Ames, IA will unveil its newest instrument platform, the DNA PROfiler(TM) system, at BIO 2008. This instrument is being designed to significantly decrease the time to identify infections which could help clinicians treat patients sooner and with more knowledge.
Dr. Steven J Lasky, CEO of AATI, states, “We are excited about this new identification system. Very soon many diverse microbiology fields will be transformed by the ability to have molecular based microbial species identification in just 2 hours instead of 2 days. Up until now molecular-based identifications have been too costly, too labor intensive, and too slow.”
Dr Gary Procop, Director, Molecular Microbiology, Mycology, and Parasitology of the Cleveland Clinic, states, “Soon doctors will no longer just ask yes or no questions about what might be causing an infection but will have unequivocal results. The beauty of this method is that a sequence-based, species-level identification could be available within hours of testing.”
Unlike biochemical-based identification systems which can take days and rely on the viability and phenotypic characteristics of the microorganism, the DNA PROfiler(TM) system from AATI, will provide accurate and rapid species level identification of microorganisms. The system is nucleic acid based, coupling DNA amplification with capillary electrophoresis to provide sequence- based data. The DNA PROfiler(TM) system is under development. AATI is working with the Cleveland Clinic and other research institutes to evaluate the system and prepare it for commercial launch in 2009.
Providing rapid and accurate sequence-based data has applications in many fields besides microbial identification. These applications include plant and pharmaceutical sciences, consumer product testing as well as forensic testing. AATI is actively looking for strategic partners for these applications.
