Stericycle Inc. Continues Partnership With National Safety Council to Bring Opioid Crisis Campaign to Houston

CHICAGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Stericycle Inc., a leading provider of essential and highly specialized compliance-based solutions, is continuing its partnership with the National Safety Council (NSC) as the exclusive medication disposal partner for its “Stop Everyday Killers” national education campaign addressing the opioid epidemic. On Oct. 22, Prescribed to Death: A Memorial to the Victims of the Opioid Crisis will be unveiled in Houston – the sixth stop of the nationwide tour – at the George R. Brown Convention Center during this year’s NSC Congress and Expo. The memorial is free and open to the public from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, Oct. 22, and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 23, and Wednesday, Oct. 24.

The opioid crisis is the most fatal drug epidemic in U.S. history. With opioid-related overdoses reaching an all-time high, the NSC partnered with Stericycle last fall to launch this provocative nationwide campaign that illustrates the faces behind the numbers, educates the community on the scope of the problem and promotes solutions to address the crisis.

The Prescribed to Death exhibit includes a memorial wall made of thousands of small white pills – each carved with a human face to represent those lost to prescription opioid overdose.

“The most important thing about this crisis is not the statistics, but the faces,” said Deborah A.P. Hersman, president and CEO of the National Safety Council. “The data speak to our head, but the individual stories speak to our hearts. The Prescribed to Death memorial not only brings visitors face-to-face with this everyday killer, but also encourages actions that will help us eliminate these preventable deaths.”

“We are pleased to share Prescribed to Death with the Houston community,” said Charles A. Alutto, Chief Executive Officer of Stericycle. “Our hope is that this emotionally moving and impactful memorial will help community members better understand the opioid crisis as well as options to help combat it.”

As part of the industry’s most comprehensive pharmaceutical disposal program, Stericycle’s Seal&Send envelopes provide a safe, reliable and anonymous method to easily mail unused medicines for disposal. To ease the process of returning unused pills and bring further awareness to this epidemic, Stericycle will provide complimentary Seal&Send medication disposal envelopes to everyone who visits the memorial in Houston.
