OncLive® Announces Hope S. Rugo, M.D., FASCO, Chair of Giants of Cancer Care® Steering Committee

Rugo will be joined by three new Steering Committee members, David R. Gandara, M.D., Yelena Y. Janjigian, M.D., and Jamile M. Shammo, M.D., FASCP, FACP, who will collaborate with the committee to select the 2021 semifinalists for the Giants of Cancer Care^® recognition program.

Rugo is a professor of medicine and director, breast oncology and clinical trials education at the University of California, San Francisco Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center, San Francisco, California.

An active researcher, Rugo has published many peer-reviewed papers and given presentations on a variety of breast cancer and supportive care-related topics. She is also an investigator and chair of the safety committee for the national multicenter ISPY2 trial and is the principal investigator in several clinical trials. In addition, Rugo is a past recipient of a Komen Promise Award, receives funding from the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, was the 2010 recipient of the Cancer Care Physician of the Year Award, is a fellow of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, and was recently inducted as a member of the 2020 Giants of Cancer Care^® class. She has been a steering and selection committee member since the program’s inception in 2013 and served as the original committee chair from 2013 to 2015.

The steering committee chooses the Giants of Cancer Care^® semifinalists from the field of nominations. Members of the steering committee have dedicated their valuable time to the program, providing guidance to OncLive^® as it further develops this initiative. Most importantly, the steering committee selects the oncologists and researchers who ultimately will be voted on by the selection committee that comprises an exclusive group of oncologists, clinicians, and researchers, boasting more than 120 members.
