icad, inc. Introduces PureLook(TM) Mammography Film Digitizer

NASHUA, N.H., Oct. 26 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- iCAD(R), Inc. , an industry-leading provider of Computer-Aided Detection (CAD) solutions, today announced the availability of its PureLook Mammography Film Digitizer. PureLook is the film-to-digital acquisition module for the iCAD TotalLook(TM), and SecondLook(R) Product Lines. As breast care clinics move toward a digital environment, converting film mammograms to digital images plays an increasingly important role. Digitizing prior mammograms makes comparative reading in the same digital context possible, alleviating issues with glare and other ergonomic concerns. Mammography relies heavily upon a comparative look at prior years of mammograms to check for change over time. According to the American Cancer Society over 90% of the estimated 48 million mammograms taken this year are for women who have previous studies. Digital Mammography can represent a break in the context between the prior year mammograms and the current digital mammogram. This is a major concern since mammography is interpreted with as much emphasis on information from the prior years as the current year. PureLook was specifically developed to capture the full fidelity of film based mammograms to avoid any break in context and provide the gateway for clinics to transition to digital.

PureLook is the next step in the evolutionary development of iCAD’s Fulcrum Mammography Film Digitizer Product. PureLook is based on iCAD’s patented CIS device technology. Eliminating mirrors or traditional lenses enables iCAD to reduce image aberrations and flaws and provide exceptional spatial resolution of the captured films. CIS device technology captures the content for every pixel directly from the film without any mitigating deterioration. Consequently, PureLook is able to achieve an uncompromised optical density (OD) range from 0 to 4.4 capturing the optimal ranges of grayscale from the darkest mammography film background to the lightest calcification. And PureLook also provides image detail at 12 lp/mm precision, unparalleled in the industry, making it possible for the system to see small structures such as micro-calcification clusters. PureLook is fast, capable of acquiring a small mammogram film in 23 seconds. Other manufacturers of film digitizers resort to the creation of a high quality mode so that higher resolution can be captured at slower speeds. PureLook delivers outstanding image quality at blinding speeds. There is no need to trade off two parameters that are absolutely necessary in every practice. PureLook delivers image quality and high speed in one compact package.

“Digitized Mammography Film Images are used in three main ways: for Computer Aided Detection (CAD), for comparative reading and for digital archival. PureLook excels at all of these. CAD benefits from being able to work from the best and purest images. Comparative reading is only made possible when the physician understands that the complete image has been captured and that there is no need to consult the film,” notes W. Scott Parr, President and CEO of iCAD. “The impact of digital archival is only just beginning to be understood. In the wake of recent natural disasters which resulted in the complete loss of medical records, digital archival represents a solution which ensures continuance of the patient record. In particular, disaster recovery is essential to mammography since the reading process is a comparison to the complete record of mammograms from prior years. PureLook is a core building block that enables the transition from film to the digital environment.”
