Hamamatsu Photonics Develops Commercially Viable Photonic Crystal Laser

November 13, 2013 -- Hamamatsu Photonics K.K. has announced the development of a commercially viable photonic crystal laser, which is a next-generation laser light source that provides high output and high beam quality at a single wavelength while simultaneously controlling beam spread. The new laser was developed by a group from Hamamatsu Photonics and Kyoto University’s Photonics and Electronics Science and Engineering Center.
The new laser can potentially be used as a light source for a large variety of applications, such as direct laser microfabrication, various types of laser excitation, wavelength conversion in projectors, sensing and measurement, position detection, distance measuring image sensors, profile measurement systems, and motion sensing. Hamamatsu plans to begin offering samples of the new laser to instrument manufacturers by spring 2014.
Hamamatsu will exhibit the new photonic crystal laser at Photon Fair 2013, the company’s new technology exhibition to be held from the 7th – 9th November at the Act City Hamamatsu Convention Center in Hamamatsu, Japan.
