Global 1 Medical Bundled Payment System Disrupting U.S. Healthcare One Bill At A Time
Published: Mar 13, 2018
SAN DIEGO, March 13, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Global 1 today announced it has expanded its medical bundled payment system to more than 85 outpatient surgery centers with a growing network of more than 650 physicians. Global 1 is now the largest commercially insured bundled payments manager in California and amongst the largest in the nation.
"The increasing number of patients, surgery centers and physicians that are using Global 1's medical bundled payment for outpatient surgeries serves as a testament to the great opportunity for improved transparency and cost savings in healthcare," explained Scott Leggett, co-founder and principal of Global 1. "We are thrilled to be leading the way."
Founded in 2010, Global 1 is a licensed Third-Party Administrator that manages bundled payment claims on behalf of its Providers and Commercial Carriers. Global 1's goal is to use this disruptive payment system to provide transparency, reduce cost and simplify billing.
"Can you imagine if automakers gave you a separate bill for every part of a car that you purchased? And, you didn't know the cost or how many bills would come? That example is what many patients deal with after having surgery," said Leggett. "We take that basic automotive model and apply it to non-emergent surgeries. We work as a team with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and facilities to provide one out-of-pocket price for the patient that is set prior to the surgery or 'episode of care.'"
Currently, Global 1's bundled payment system offers a growing number of procedures including the following examples:
Cardiology (AICD, pacemaker)
ENT (sinus surgery, thyroidectomy, tonsillectomy)
General Surgery (gastric sleeve, breast reconstruction, hernia repair)
Gynecology (laparoscopy, hysterectomy)
Orthopedics (arthroscopy, joint replacement, carpal tunnel)
Spine (micro-discectomy, laminectomy, fusions)
Global 1's expanding program offers streamlined care that is easy to access and has the support of a number of employers who are waiving out-of-pocket expenses for workers who elect to use a bundled payment program. One success story is Dean Chavez, who was advised by his physicians that he needed a total hip replacement.
"The simplicity of Global 1's program worked for me," said Chavez. "I especially liked that everyone collaborated to provide a start-to-finish treatment and a recovery plan from the pre-operative work to the final visit with the physical therapist."
