Caldera Medical Achieves CE Mark Certification for Desara(R) Mini

Caldera Medical today announced that it has achieved CE Mark certification for its Desara® Mini implant, an extension of its popular Desara brand for the treatment of Stress Urinary Incontinence. Desara Mini combines the proven Desara mesh with a secure fixation system that allows for sling placement with a single incision.

The company plans to roll out Desara Mini to select international markets, and expects Desara Mini to both broaden its customer segments as well as boost its average selling price per surgical procedure, inline with the introduction of the new value-added technology that Desara Mini brings to the market. Although awareness of surgical treatment options for incontinence has grown in recent years, it remains a largely underpenetrated market, and the introduction of less invasive product offerings like Desara Mini are continuing to drive a strong level of growth worldwide.

In accordance with Caldera’s surgeon-focused market approach, Desara Mini was designed in collaboration with a team of respected surgeons. Similar to Caldera Medical’s other implants, Desara Mini utilizes reusable instrumentation, providing surgeons and hospitals with an environmentally-friendly solution that reduces the amount of packaging, biohazardous waste, and impact on landfills.

“Since our inception, we have striven to provide surgeons with choices,” commented Bryon L. Merade, Chairman and CEO, adding “Desara Mini builds on this tradition by providing our physician customers with another surgical option that they can incorporate into their range of treatment options for incontinence.”

Caldera also announced Q1 2011 results, featuring 40% revenue growth compared to the same period of the prior year. Both the incontinence and prolapse franchises benefited from the company’s sales force expansion, which has brought greater reach and service capabilities to the customer base. In addition, the pricing environment remained favorable as reimbursement for the related surgical procedures continues to rise for hospitals and in an even more significant way at the ambulatory surgical center level.

Caldera Medical’s product lines include the Desara® Sling System for treatment of Stress Urinary Incontinence and Ascend® Pelvic Floor Repair System with Apical Support for Pelvic Organ Prolapse. Both of these products are designed to work with the suite of Caldera Medical introducers, utilizing the Universal Connection System, which allows surgical facilities to standardize with Caldera implants while preserving surgeon preference on surgical approach.
