A reorganization of a division of Swiss pharmaceutical giant Roche has hit home in Branford with the layoffs of 60 people at the company’s 454 Life Sciences subsidiary. The layoffs were implemented Tuesday at the company, which specializes in developing and commercializing genome sequencer systems to analyze DNA. Roche’s reorganization plan for 454 Life Sciences also has claimed the job of 110 company employees in Penzberg, Germany. Claudia Schmitt, a company spokeswoman based in Germany, said in an e-mail the layoffs are part of an elimination of the Roche’s Applied Science Division in order to enhance the company’s overall “responsiveness to scientific and market needs.” Products being developed by the Applied Science Division will integrated into the portfolios of other parts of the company.
