Biotechnology Association Of Alabama To Hold Annual Meeting May 10, 2004

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 29, 2004-- U.S. Representative Spencer Bachus to present keynote address, with six workshops also available for attendees

The Biotechnology Association of Alabama (BAA) will hold its annual meeting May 10, 2004 at the Birmingham Marriott Hotel in Birmingham, Ala., with U.S. Representative Spencer Bachus, R-AL as the keynote speaker at the luncheon.

The one-day event, themed "Being All We Can Be," will provide a venue for BAA officers to discuss organization business with BAA members and other interested parties, such as the association's financial report, elections, annual survey results, the annual report and more. In addition, workshops on public and media relations, licensing of university technology, finding adequately trained employees and other topics will be conducted in the afternoon.

"We always look forward to our annual meeting as a time to connect with our members and others in both formal and informal settings," said G. Michael Alder, executive director of the BAA. "This year our agenda is expanding a bit from past annual meetings and we've put together six great workshops that we believe will be very interesting and instructive and that will help participants 'be all they can be.' We're also thrilled that Congressman Bachus will be our keynote speaker, and we look forward to his remarks."

The meeting schedule is as follows:

10-11 a.m. - Exhibits and late registration

11 a.m.-Noon - Business meeting

Noon-1 p.m. - Luncheon/keynote address

1-3 p.m. - Workshops

Workshops will be held concurrently at 1 p.m. and then repeated at 2 p.m. The topics and presenters are:

-- "The 'How-To's' of Biotech Public Relations" -- jointly presented by David Politis, president of Politis Communications and freelance journalist/writer/speaker Verna Gates;

-- "Licensing Technology Efficiently From Our Universities" -- a panel discussion with moderator Greg Peterson of the law firm Bradley Arant; Lucy Hicks, director of the Office of Intellectual Property Management at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and the Southern Research Institute; Jan Thornton, director of the Office of Technology Transfer, Auburn University; Nicole Baute, director of the Office of Technology Development at the University of South Alabama; and Marianne Woods, associate vice president for research at the University of Alabama;

-- "Insurance for All Stages of Company Growth" -- jointly presented by Bryce Willis, financial planner for MET Life; Mike Kirchner, group specialist for MET Life; and David Aller, vice president of producer development for Monitor Liability;

-- "How to Get the Most From Membership Benefits" -- by Tamy Dalal, manager of business development and strategic planning for Biotechnology Industry Organization;

-- "How to Get Adequately Trained Employees" -- by Ed Castile, director of Alabama Industrial Development Training; and

-- "International Outsourcing and Partnering" -- by G. Michael Alder, executive director of the BAA.
