Entrinsic Health Solutions Announce Journal of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition Publication of Clinical Data Comparing Efficacy of Rehydration Therapies
NORWOOD, Mass., March 14, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Entrinsic Health Solutions, Inc., an innovative health sciences company dedicated to the development and commercialization of amino acid-based technologies, today announced the publication of research showing that enterade® - a liquid-based medical food that is comprised of amino acids and is glucose-free - provides superior rehydration compared to popular sports drinks. The study, entitled: "Efficacy of Glucose or Amino Acid-Based Commercial Beverages in Meeting Oral Rehydration Therapy Goals After Acute Hypertonic and Isotonic Dehydration," was led by the U.S. Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine (USAREIM) and published online in the Journal of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition.
In this study, 26 healthy adults (21 males, 5 females) underwent either a controlled bout of hypertonic or isotonic dehydration. Hypertonic dehydration was achieved from exercise on a treadmill or cycle ergometer, and isotonic dehydration was produced by oral administration of a diuretic to stimulate increased urine and electrolyte losses. The study compared using a sports drink versus enterade® to achieve rehydration and analyzed fluid retention, plasma volume (PV), and interstitial fluid (ISF) volume restoration.
Results indicate that enterade® replaced electrolytes and preserved fluid retention better than the more popular and well-known sports drink option. In the hypertonic trial, enterade® produced significantly greater fluid retention compared to the sports drink (75% versus 57%), ISF volume restoration, and greater PV restoration. In the isotonic dehydration trial, enterade® replaced electrolytes and preserved ISF volume better than the sports drink.
"Sports drinks are a popular choice for addressing 'all-cause' fluid and electrolyte imbalances despite narrow marketing to the contrary. Their formulations are optimized for consumption during exercise and contain too much glucose and not enough electrolytes to remedy the kinds of fluid and electrolyte deficits common to many circumstances, such as illness and very prolonged exercise," said Samuel N. Cheuvront, PhD, RD, Research Physiologist at the U.S. Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine Thermal and Mountain Medicine Division. "In this study, we found that an amino acid-based solution with more electrolytes restored body water and electrolytes better than the sports drink - and without the need for sugar."
"enterade® is comprised of a specific blend of amino acids and electrolytes to rebuild and protect the gastrointestinal tract and facilitate total body hydration," said Sadasivan Vidyasagar, MD, PhD, co-author of the study and Chief Scientific Officer and Co-founder at Entrinsic Health Solutions. "The critical amino acids that we have identified help tighten the mucosal barrier and enhance the body's ability to absorb fluids, nutrients, and vitamins - all leading to improved digestive function and absorptive capacity."

enterade® is a first-in-class, glucose-free medical food that is composed of critical amino acids and electrolytes (potassium and sodium) to help manage debilitating gastrointestinal (GI) side effects. The specific blend of amino acids and electrolytes help rebuild and protect the GI tract and facilitate total body hydration. With no sugar to cause GI dysfunction, enterade® supports the small bowel's ability to absorb fluids, nutrients, and vitamins and leads to improved digestive function. By helping to restore normal GI function, enterade® reduces dehydration and diarrhea, leading to a significant improvement in overall quality of life and a healthier gut.
