Aptuit Consulting is pleased to announce that Dr. David E. Bugay, Dr. Leonard J. Chyall, and Mr. Eyal H. Barash have joined the company. They come to Aptuit Consulting from SSCI Inc., bringing to the team extensive experience in analytical R&D, project management, and patent litigation. All are based at the Aptuit facility in West Lafayette, Indiana.

Dr. David E. Bugay Dr. Bugay, a Managing Director at Aptuit Consulting, was previously Senior VP of Analytical Chemistry at SSCI, Inc. where he led unprecedented growth in its analytical business line, including analytical research, analytical resources, and expert witnessing services in pharmaceutical patent litigation. In his new role at Aptuit Consulting, Dr. Bugay will concentrate on continued growth of the expert witnessing service line as well as new opportunities in counterfeit and tampering analysis services.
Dr. Bugay received his B.S. in Chemistry from Le Moyne College (Syracuse, NY) and holds a Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry from the University of Vermontand is an expert in analytical and physical chemistry. His expertise includes techniques such as vibrational spectroscopy (IR, Raman, NIR), NMR spectroscopy (liquid and solid), thermal analysis (DSC, TG), x-ray diffraction (powder and single crystal), microscopy (optical, fluorescence, scanning electron, and vibrational), chemometrics, and moisture analysis among others. Dr. Bugay has been an invited speaker at a significant number of conferences as well as authoring a large number of peer-reviewed scientific journal articles (21), book chapters (10), and a book on pharmaceutical excipient characterization. He currently serves as a manuscript reviewer for six scientific journals including Pharmaceutical Research and the Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences. Dr. Bugay was appointed to the USP Expert Committee for the 2005 to 2010 term and he was awarded a fellowship by the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists in 2003. Prior to joining SSCI, Dr. Bugay was a Principal Scientist in Analytical Research and Development at Bristol-Myers Squibb. Dr. Bugay is a member of the American Chemical Society, the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists, the Society of Applied Spectroscopy, and the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain.
Dr. Leonard J. Chyall Dr. Chyall has accepted a position as Senior Consultant, Aptuit Consulting, reporting to Dr. David Bugay. Dr. Chyall is an organic chemist with expertise in synthetic chemistry, crystallization technologies, and the analysis of pharmaceutical solids. At SSCI, Dr. Chyall was a Senior Research Investigator for external client projects and was also involved with internal R&D. In this role, he developed new pharmaceutical products and crystallization methods, and he served as a scientific consultant to attorneys representing pharmaceutical companies involved in patent infringement cases. In his new role at Aptuit Consulting, Dr. Chyall will continue to serve the needs of pharmaceutical companies as a consultant and an expert witness.
Prior to joining SSCI, Dr. Chyall worked for five years as a research chemist in the corporate R&D division of Great Lakes Chemical Corp. Dr. Chyall is a co-author of over 20 peer-reviewed scientific publications and co-inventor of three patented inventions. Dr. Chyall holds an A.B. degree in Chemistry from Oberlin Collegeand a Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from the University of Minnesota. He is a member of the American Chemical Society.
Mr. Eyal H. Barash Mr. Barash has accepted a position as Principal, Aptuit Consulting, on a half-time basis, contributing the other half of his time as Chief Patent Counsel to Aptuit, Inc. In his role as a consultant, Mr. Barash provides consulting services to law firms and pharmaceutical companies in intellectual property protection. As a Principal in Aptuit Consulting, he does not provide legal advice. Mr. Barash has been invited to deliver lectures throughout the world on solid form patents, Hatch-Waxman law, and pharmaceutical patent strategies. Mr. Barash is also frequently invited to provide such presentations in-house to Aptuit Consulting clients and potential clients.
Prior to accepting a position with Aptuit and Aptuit Consulting, Mr. Barash was general counsel to SSCI, Inc. Before that, he worked in the Washington, D.C. office of Finnegan, Henderson, Farabow, Garrett & Dunner, LLP, one of the most highly regarded patent firms in the United States, where he focused his practice on pharmaceutical patent litigation and prosecution.. Mr. Barash holds a J.D. from Northwestern University School of Law, an M.S. in Physical Chemistry from Universityof Californiaat Berkeley, and a B.S. in Chemistry and B.A. in History from IndianaUniversityin Bloomington, Indiana. He is a member of the American Chemical Society, the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists, the American Intellectual Property Law Association, and the American Bar Association.
