AmerisourceBergen Corporation Announces The Launch Of The Amerisourcebergen Foundation To Support Health And Community Causes

CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa., Aug. 6, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- AmerisourceBergen, a global healthcare solutions leader, today announced the launch of the AmerisourceBergen Foundation, a not-for-profit charitable giving organization, which provides grants to health-related causes and educational opportunities that enrich the lives of members of the global community.

The AmerisourceBergen Foundation

“As one of the nation’s largest healthcare solutions organizations, AmerisourceBergen recognizes that we have a responsibility to inspire and to improve access to health and pharmaceutical services,” said Steven H. Collis, President and Chief Executive Officer of AmerisourceBergen. “Our new Foundation is committed to upholding this core value, and we look forward to supporting organizations that share our goal of driving a positive and sustainable impact to healthcare delivery across the globe.”

The first beneficiary of the AmerisourceBergen Foundation is Project HOME who has used a $250,000 foundation grant to build a new community pharmacy in the Stephen Klein Wellness Center in North Central Philadelphia. The pharmacy will serve patients from the community and those who suffer from chronic homelessness supported by Project HOME, through accessible, discounted prescription, over-the-counter medications, prescription delivery services to patients with mobility challenges and health and pharmacy services provided by a Thomas Jefferson University Hospital pharmacist. Additionally, select over-the-counter products for the pharmacy will be donated by Good Neighbor Pharmacy, which is affiliated with AmerisourceBergen.

“Project HOME strives to break the cycle of homelessness and poverty for those in need in the greater Philadelphia community. Simple, reliable access to health and pharmaceutical services can be a key factor in doing just that,” said June Barry, President of the AmerisourceBergen Foundation. “Funding the creation of a pharmacy at Project HOME’s Stephen Klein Wellness Center in order to meet the healthcare needs of a community with access challenges is a wonderful demonstration of the role that the AmerisourceBergen Foundation is looking to play in communities across the globe.”

The pharmacy will be unveiled during a ceremony and health fair from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, August 8 kicking off National Health Center Week, which recognizes and celebrates the opportunities that health centers provide individuals to receive health care regardless of their insurance status or ability to pay. During the fair, public healthcare services will be provided including blood pressure readings, insurance sign ups and wellness tips. The fair is open to the public and will take place outside of the Stephen Klein Wellness Center at 2144 Cecil B. Moore Avenue, Philadelphia, Pa. 19121.

“The mission of the Project HOME community is to empower adults, children and families to break the cycle of homelessness and poverty, to alleviate the underlying causes of poverty, and to enable all of us to attain our fullest potential as individuals and as members of the broader society,” said Sister Mary Scullion, President and Executive Director of Project HOME. “Our new pharmacy, made possible through the AmerisourceBergen Foundation, is key in our effort to provide quality healthcare and wellness for the second poorest zip code in Philadelphia.”

The AmerisourceBergen Foundation focuses on health and wellbeing initiatives that improve patient outcomes including pharmaceutical accessibility programs, pharmaceutical adherence programs and health improvement research. The Foundation will further help effect positive change in the patient experience and empower providers through support for K-12 education, nursing programs, pharmacy programs and needs-based scholarships for youth.
