NORTHBROOK, Ill., Dec. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- W. Michael Alberts, MD, FCCP, was inducted as President of the American College of Chest Physicians (ACCP) at CHEST 2005, the College’s 71st annual international scientific assembly, held October 29 through November 3, in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Dr. Alberts is Chief Medical Officer at the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute and Professor of Oncology and Medicine in the Department of Interdisciplinary Oncology at the University of South Florida College of Medicine in Tampa, FL. As ACCP President, Dr. Alberts will build on the strengths of the ACCP to assist and support its members in delivering patient- focused care.

As an active Fellow of the ACCP for more than 20 years, Dr. Alberts has served the ACCP in many leadership roles, including chairing the Continuing Education Committee and the Council of Governors and serving on the Board of Regents and Executive Committee of the Board of Regents. Dr. Alberts currently is the editor of the ACCP Evidence-Based Guidelines on the Diagnosis and Management of Lung Cancer and serves on the CHEST editorial board and the editorial boards of several other journals.
Dr. Alberts received his MD from the University of Illinois and earned an MBA degree from the University of South Florida. He completed a residency in Internal Medicine at the Ohio State University and a Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Fellowship at the University of California in San Diego. His research and scholarly interests include the diagnosis and management of lung cancer, occupational airways disorders, and the business of medicine. Dr. Alberts has been the recipient of numerous awards and honors, including being selected by his peers to be listed in the Best Doctors in America.
Dr. Alberts and his wife Debra live in Tampa, FL, with their two children. Debra Alberts became chair of The CHEST Foundation Ambassadors Group at CHEST 2005. The Ambassadors Group comprises ACCP spouses and other interested individuals who serve as emissaries to help the ACCP and The CHEST Foundation improve patient care and lung health through education.
