What:
Washington, DC demonstration of eLEGS http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WcM0ruq28dc, a new wearable robot -- or exoskeleton -- used by patients with lower extremity paralysis or weakness. An artificially intelligent, bionic, battery-powered and ready-to-wear device, eLEGS powers wheelchair users up to get them standing and walking again. Five years in development, eLEGS provides unprecedented knee flexion, which translates into the most natural human gait available in any exoskeleton today.
Who:
Berkeley Bionics, (berkeleybionics.com) -- based in Berkeley, CA and founded in 2005 -- develops and manufactures powered and artificially intelligent human exoskeletons for military, civilian and medical uses that augment strength, endurance, and mobility. In 2008, Berkeley Bionics produced HULC™ (Human Universal Load Carrier), an exoskeleton that enables the wearer to carry up to 200 lbs over all kinds of terrain for hours. Lockheed Martin Corporation entered into a licensed agreement with Berkeley Bionics in January, 2009 and is currently productizing HULC. Now Berkeley Bionics is preparing to put its second exoskeleton, eLEGS, on the market.
Witness:
Amanda Boxtel -- paraplegic for 19 years -- stand up and walk wearing eLEGS, and listen to her describe the experience in her own words.
Hear:
Eythor Bender, CEO of Berkeley Bionics, announce the names of the ten rehabilitation centers in the nation that have partnered with Berkeley Bionics to conduct the investigational trials of eLEGS and become future eLEGS Centers.
Learn:
How rehabilitation centers are using the exoskeleton to power paraplegics up to get them standing and walking.
Meet:
Representatives from some of the best rehabilitation centers in the world, including Dr. Donald Peck Leslie, Medical Director of Atlanta’s Shepherd Center, and Dr. Kristjan T. Ragnarsson, Professor and Chair of Rehabilitation Medicine at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York, New York.
