Vibromyography Technology From Sonostics to Measure Muscle Activity to Be Marketed Worldwide by BIOPAC Systems, Inc.

BINGHAMTON, NY--(Marketwire - April 12, 2010) - Sonostics, Inc., a spin-off from the bioengineering department at Binghamton University is pleased to announce it has entered into an exclusive sales agreement with BIOPAC Systems of Goleta, CA, a worldwide leader in data acquisition software and hardware platforms for researchers and educators.

Sonostics integrates proprietary BPS-II transducers and wavelet packet analysis algorithms that measure muscle activity with BIOPAC’s AcqKnowledge software, offering researchers an exciting avenue to assess Type-2 voluntarily contracting muscles. The technology is currently the only modality capable of non-invasively measuring muscle effort.

Extraordinarily easy to use as compared with electromyography, the transducers are placed atop the muscle belly and collect vibration data as muscles contract. Similar to applying a blood pressure cuff, there are no electrodes, no needles and no disposables. Results are not susceptible to sweat or motion artifact. A new module in BIOPAC’s AcqKnowledge software, called Vibromyography Filter, processes the muscle effort data for analysis. Initially, this offering will be available via the BIOPAC MP150 and MP36 platforms.

“Our strategic partnership with BIOPAC will be instrumental in bringing vibromyography techniques to the community of researchers and academics at the forefront of kinesiology and sports performance measurement,” said Sonostics’ CEO Chuck Schwerin. “We are fortunate to have attracted a partner such as BIOPAC, whose reach into this sector is prodigious.”

Sonostics will market its own turn-key device, called MyoWave, to physical therapists, trainers, chiropractors, and physicians for use in injury-prevention screening and rehabilitation.

About Sonostics
Incorporated in 2008, Sonostics develops modalities to assist professionals engaged in rehabilitation of musculoskeletal injuries as well as those seeking to reduce the risk of such injuries through the early identification of muscle imbalance conditions. Through an innovative application of vibromyography, muscle vibration data is collected and converted to absolute effort through a non-invasive use of highly sensitive transducers and patent-pending algorithms.

About BIOPAC Systems
BIOPAC was founded in 1985 and, with over 20 years of success, is recognized around the world as a premier choice for life science hardware and software. BIOPAC’s mission is to develop innovative, high quality, competitively priced life sciences educational and research hardware and software designed to meet customer’s needs.
