CEOs are chosen to have good general management and leadership skills but many don’t have the specialist skills needed to lead innovation. In 2006, Nokia, then the world leader in mobile phones, appointed Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo as CEO. He had been with the company since 1980. So he had many years of industry experience. But he had studied law at University of Helsinki, worked at Nokia first in the legal department, and then in finance.
