WHAT: In response to what has become a national public health crisis, the American Nurses Association (ANA) is launching in New York City -- “The American Nurses Association’s Take Action for Healthy Blood Pressure Tour” -- a 10-city national bus tour. * A team of 50 registered nurses from the New York State Nurses Association, along with a customized, vibrant mobile unit, will roll into New York City to inform the public that: * High blood pressure may be causing damage now. The heart beats about 100,000 times a day. That’s 100,000 chances for high blood pressure to cause damage somewhere along the 60,000 miles of blood vessels inside the body, including the blood vessels leading to the eyes, heart, brain and kidneys. * New national guidelines state that even slight elevations in blood pressure can significantly increase your risk of having a stroke or heart attack. In addition, the ANA will conduct free blood pressure screenings and distribute educational materials. WHY: FACT: One in four adults living in New York City have high blood pressure.
