CORAL GABLES, Fla., Sept. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Charles Stiefel, CEO of Stiefel Laboratories, has endowed a chair in the Department of Dermatology and Cutaneous Surgery at the University of Miami Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine. The Stiefel Laboratories, Inc. Chair in Medical Dermatology will help advance the school’s renowned dermatology department, which is currently celebrating its 50th anniversary.
The Stiefel family business has been committed to dermatology around the world for nearly 160 years. Charlie Stiefel’s great-great-grandfather started Stiefel Laboratories in 1847 in Europe. The firm moved its international headquarters to Coral Gables, Fla. in 1977.
“We have a strong commitment to advancements in the field of Dermatology,” Stiefel said. “I wanted to do my part to ensure that research continues to flourish at the Miller School for generations to come.”
Lawrence A. Schachner, M.D., Chairman and Harvey Blank Professor in the Department of Dermatology and Cutaneous Surgery, said the gift will help the program advance its critical work. “This Chair will provide, in perpetuity, for a world-class physician to care for patients who face life-threatening skin disorders. People in Florida, the Southern U.S., the Caribbean Basin, and Latin America will benefit from the generosity of Stiefel Laboratories.”
Some 25 years ago, the company also helped to endow a chair in the name of Dr. Harvey Blank, who founded the department 50 years ago. Today, the Miller School has the largest dermatology residency program in the country, and treats more than 60,000 patients each year.
It also features some of the best doctors in their field. For example, all of the 11 South Florida dermatologists listed in Best Doctors in America 2003- 2005 are current or former faculty members, volunteer faculty or former residents.
