SAN FRANCISCO, July 22, 2014 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- The Oto-Tip, a non-abrasive spinning swab for cleaning ears better, currently has 29 days left in its Indiegogo campaign and has raised more than $9,500 of their $30,000 funding goal. The Oto-Tip has an automated flexible tip that moves in a precise motion to direct ear wax outwards, rather than simply push wax further into the ear canal as cotton swabs do.

The number one cause of treatable impaired hearing worldwide is wax build up. Everyday, millions of people around the world clean their ears the wrong way, adding to the problem. Lily Truong, creator behind the Oto-Tip, has first-hand experience with hearing impairment. Her mother went deaf in her left ear years ago. This serves as a source of inspiration for Truong and the company she co-founded with Dr. Jain.
Developed by a surgeon and biomechanical engineer duo from Stanford University, Clear Ear offers innovative devices that help keep ears cleaner and healthier without injury. Designed to protect the ear drum, Oto-Tip’s soft blue cap automatically limits the device from being pushed too far into the ear. While repeat use of cotton swabs dries out the ear canal, causing itchiness, which many people attempt to alleviate with more cotton swabs, the soft tip of the Oto-Tip is designed to prevent this cycle. The easy-to-clean Oto-Tip is also more eco friendly. Over 25.5 billion one-time-use cotton swabs are produced each year, but the Oto-Tip is reusable, preventing waste and saving money.
Clear Ear is also using the crowdfunding of the Oto-Tip to make ear health more readily accessible around the world. Backers of the campaign can choose “Here and There” perks that provide a free ear health screening and cleaning to one other person in addition to the product they receive themselves. In August, Truong and her co-creators behind Clear Ear will travel to Varni, India to partner with Healthy Scholars Foundation & the Community Center for Development (CCD) to eliminate health barriers to education in the region. While at the CCD, Healthy Scholar’s Health Screening Camp will focus on 5 key areas: hearing, thyroid, vision, dental, and girls health. Clear Ear will be supporting the “Ear Health Screening Camp and Ear Cleaning” portion for the students, along side other partners supporting the other 4 areas of focus.
“Innovations in ear health simply have not been made accessible to all those who need it so far. Our goal is to promote better ear health both at home and across the globe,” Truong said. “We’ve previously seen people use really dangerous methods to clean out ear wax like safety pins, ear candling and bobby pins.”
Contributors to the campaign can provide one ear health screening and cleaning for students in Varni, India for $20, or receive their own Oto-Tip and provide the “Here and There” perk for $50. Contributions of $30 earn one Oto-Tip for basic cleaning.
For $100 and up, backers will receive Clear Ear’s deep cleaning product, the TECHOME. Wholesale distribution packages are also available as perks. The Oto-Tip’s Indiegogo campaign will run until August 18, 2014.
