“Bruce Reid was a valuable member of our senior management team who provided strong leadership and strategic vision to the many people who were fortunate enough to work with him,” said Fred Hassan, chairman and chief executive officer. “On behalf of all Schering-Plough colleagues worldwide, we would like to extend our condolences to the Reid family and to Bruce’s many friends.

“It was truly a privilege working with Bruce,” Hassan added. “Through his personal leadership and team spirit, he was a symbol of passion, courage and tenacity.”

“Bruce was an inspirational business leader,” said Carrie S. Cox, executive vice president and president, Global Pharmaceuticals. “He cared deeply for the people who were helped by our medicines, but also for those with whom he worked every day -- he was an engaged mentor and counselor who worked very hard to help develop colleagues to broaden their abilities. Bruce was a friend and an inspiration to so many of us.”

Reid joined Schering-Plough in July 2003 and was responsible for managing the Profit & Loss for the company’s U.S. Pharmaceutical Business, as well as providing operational management for the GPB finance and information technology groups. In addition, he was a member of the Operations Management Team and oversaw the key support functions of the company’s Global Business Operations unit, which includes U.S. sales operations and distribution, global training, global planning and financial forecasting, global market research and strategic communications for GPB. In his most recent role, Reid led the transformational work of GPB’s Selling Excellence organization that focused on facilitating stronger and more consistent initiatives for sales teams worldwide.

Reid had more than 20 years of experience in the pharmaceutical industry. He came to Schering-Plough from Pharmacia Corporation, where he had served as group vice president of global business operations. At Pharmacia, he built a world-class global operations function and shared joint responsibility for managing Pharmacia’s $12 billion U.S. pharmaceutical business prior to its merger with Pfizer. He previously served as vice president, Business Planning and Control. He also held a number of positions with increasing responsibilities in sales and marketing management with Wyeth-Ayerst Pharmaceuticals and A.H. Robins.

Reid earned both a B.S. degree in biology and an M.B.A. degree in finance from the University of Michigan.

He is survived by his wife, Lori, and their three daughters.
