Saint Francis Memorial Hospital Awards Half a Million Dollars to Community Programs

SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- In honor of its 100th anniversary of caring for San Francisco, Saint Francis Memorial Hospital today announced a total of $500,000 in grants to six organizations that serve the San Francisco community.

The half-million-dollar “Gift to the City” contributions were awarded to the Glide Health Clinic; St. Anthony’s Free Medical Clinic; South of Market Health Center; Curry Senior Center; Bay Area Women’s and Children’s Center; and Friends of the Urban Forest.

The gifts were announced at a 100th anniversary gala celebration attended by more than 900 guests.

“As a community-based hospital, with a century of serving our diverse communities in need, we are delighted to help these organizations further their missions,” said Cheryl A. Fama, president and CEO of Saint Francis Memorial Hospital. “For more than 100 years, our Hospital has been an integral part of the health of this City, and we plan on continuing that tradition for the next century and beyond. These gifts are a reflection of our commitment to improve the quality of life in our community on a day-to-day basis, and to work through organizations that are closest to those we seek to serve.”

Caryl Ito, chair of the Hospital’s Community Advisory Council and Centennial Committee, noted that the organizations were chosen for the diversity of the communities they serve; their history and success of serving the underserved of the City; and their complimentary mission to that of Saint Francis Memorial Hospital and its parent, Catholic Healthcare West (CHW).

“Glide Health Clinic, St. Anthony’s and South of Market Health Center have a long and successful tradition of serving those who do not have access to the traditional health care system,” Ito said, “while the Curry Senior Center and Bay Area Women’s and Children’s Center serve our elder community, and low-income children and families. Friends of the Urban Forest improves the quality of life in our neighborhoods by connecting our citizens with nature and with each other,” she added.

The Glide Health Clinic will receive $100,000 from Saint Francis to fully renovate and reconfigure the sixth floor of its 330 Ellis Street facility, dedicating 4,600 square feet to a new clinic that will include exam rooms, offices, reception area and conference rooms for health education and group therapy. Through a partnership with Saint Francis’ parent company, Catholic Healthcare West, the new clinic will be named the CHW/Saint Francis Health Clinic at Glide.

St. Anthony’s, the Curry Senior Center and the South of Market Health Center also will receive $100,000 contributions. The Bay Area Women’s and Children’s Center and Friends of the Urban Forest will receive $50,000 each.

“In light of the national tragedies of the last three weeks, there has never been a more poignant and important moment for communities to support each other. Our gifts to the City will further the Hospitals commitment to serve the City’s underserved populations,” said Fama.
