Repligen Corporation Reports Initiation Of A Clinical Study Of Secretin For Functional MRI Assessment Of The Pancreas

WALTHAM, Mass., Oct. 30 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Repligen Corporation today reported the initiation of a clinical study to evaluate the diagnostic utility of RG1068, synthetic human secretin, in functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the pancreas. This study is designed to confirm and quantify the clinical observation that patients with pancreatic disease have reduced pancreatic fluid production in response to stimulation by secretin, which may be useful in early diagnosis of chronic pancreatitis. This is an investigator-initiated study conducted by the Indiana University School of Medicine in a total of 45 healthy volunteers and patients with chronic pancreatitis.

“This study harnesses the natural biological properties of the gastrointestinal hormone secretin to stimulate pancreatic secretions,” stated Walter C. Herlihy, President and Chief Executive Officer of Repligen Corporation. “If successful, secretin-stimulated assessment of pancreatic function could provide a unique and complimentary method to current radiology practice in the early detection and diagnosis of chronic pancreatitis. We believe there are more than 100,000 patients in the United States that could benefit from the use of secretin-enhanced MRI each year.”

Secretin is a natural gastrointestinal hormone involved in the process of digestion. Secretin has been used for many years by gastroenterologists in combination with endoscopy, an invasive procedure to evaluate and treat diseases of the pancreas and gallbladder. There are risks associated with the use of endoscopy, which have generated interest in the development of safer non-invasive tests to diagnose gastrointestinal disorders. The use of a non-invasive procedure such as MRI to quantify pancreatic fluid production following secretin administration harnesses the natural biologic properties of the hormone and may improve the diagnostic quality of the MRI image. Separately, Repligen is also conducting a multi-center clinical trial of RG1068 as an agent to improve the detection of structural abnormalities of the pancreatic ducts during MRI imaging of the pancreas.
