•KineMed’s assay has been validated by assessing the effects of known neurogenic antidepressant drugs of different classes on hippocampal progenitor cell proliferation.
•All drugs significantly increased proliferation by = 30% above baseline and mirtazapine exhibited a significantly faster onset of action.
