Protein Design Labs is looking to double the size of its headquarters and move to a new town. The Fremont-based biopharmaceutical company has issued a request for proposal, formalizing its search for 400,000 square feet of fresh space, according to sources in the architecture and construction trades who have seen the document. Some 150,000 square feet of that will be lab space. While no deal has been finalized, real estate sources say the company has signed a letter of intent for Pacific Shores in Redwood City -- the massive Jay Paul Co. development which has been largely vacant since 2001 when construction wrapped and tech firms tanked. Protein Design Labs did not respond to calls seeking comment, nor did Jay Paul Co. Phil Mahoney, the leasing broker representing Pacific Shores, said leasing activity is brisk at the 10-building campus, with several large deals in process now.
