Pharmacopeia, Inc.'s Chief Executive Officer Elected To Biotechnology Council of New Jersey, Inc.'s Board Of Trustees

PRINCETON, N.J., Jan. 30 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Pharmacopeia , an innovator in the discovery and development of novel small molecule therapeutics, today announced that Dr. Leslie J. Browne, Ph.D., President and Chief Executive Officer, has been elected to the Board of Trustees of the Biotechnology Council of New Jersey (BCNJ). With his election, which occurred at the recent BCNJ Annual Meeting, Dr. Browne joins a number of widely-respected members of the New Jersey biotechnology community on the BCNJ Board.

"I am truly honored to have been elected to the Board of this prestigious organization," said Dr. Browne. "I look forward to doing my part to continue to build the reputation of BCNJ as a leading voice for New Jersey's biotechnology industry."

Dr. Browne is a well-known and highly-regarded member of the New Jersey biotechnology community. During his tenure at Pharmacopeia, he has orchestrated the company's transition into a leading small molecule discovery and development company with a significant product pipeline. Prior to joining Pharmacopeia, he held management positions with leading New Jersey biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies including Berlex Laboratories and Schering Berlin Venture Corporation.

"It is fitting that Dr. Browne has joined our Board in light of the fact that Pharmacopeia is a founding member of BCNJ and the company's chairman, Dr. Joe Mollica, was one of our founding Board members," said Debbie Hart, President, BCNJ. "Having an individual of Dr. Browne's caliber on the Board further strengthens our organization and positions us to continue to play an influential role in the area of biotechnology in the state of New Jersey."

Under Dr. Browne's leadership, Pharmacopeia has secured a strong, diversified pipeline of high-value, small molecule therapeutics. To date, Pharmacopeia's collaborations with multiple partners have resulted in four compounds currently in human clinical trials and an additional six candidates that are progressing through preclinical development. Pharmacopeia's partners are conducting Phase I trials evaluating compounds targeting rheumatoid arthritis, an allergic asthma indication and an inflammation indication.

Beyond its partnerships, Pharmacopeia is focused on the advancement of its internal, wholly-owned product pipeline. This internal pipeline, with multiple compounds approaching preclinical development, is focused primarily on immunological diseases, with each program addressing unmet medical needs of a very large patient population. The company's most advanced internal programs are JAK3 inhibitors (immunosuppressants with potential utility in psoriasis, multiple sclerosis and transplant rejection), CCR-1 antagonists (anti-inflammatory agents with therapeutic potential in rheumatoid arthritis and multiple sclerosis) and adenosine A2A antagonists (anti-neurodegeneratives with potential to treat Huntingdon's, Parkinson's and Alzheimer's).
