SALT LAKE CITY, Feb. 25, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- -- OrthoGrid Systems, Inc., Salt Lake City, Utah, will be introducing new technology to address C-arm distortion and magnification at the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) 2016 Annual Meeting in Orlando, Florida, this March 2-4.

C-arm distortion can affect implant positioning and sizing, as well as postoperative limb alignment, in orthopaedic procedures such as total hip arthroplasty (THA), thereby affecting patient outcomes. According to a 2007 paper by Gouthami Chintalapani and Russell H. Taylor from the Department of Computer Science at Johns Hopkins University entitled, C-ARM DISTORTION CORRECTION USING PATIENT CT AS A FIDUCIAL, “Fluoroscopic images are extensively used for intra-operative imaging analysis because of the relatively low cost and ease of operation of the x-ray fluoroscope. These images suffer from pose dependent geometric distortion mainly due to the curved nature of detector and earth’s magnetic field[1]. In order to perform quantitative analysis in applications such as surgical navigation or 3D reconstruction, these images need to be corrected for distortion.

OrthoGrid recently released its new HipGrid® Drone technology at the AAHKS (American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons) 25th Annual Meeting in November 2015. HipGrid, a non-invasive, fluoroscopic guide for Direct Anterior and Posterior Approach THA, provides a clinically proven pattern that can be adjusted over the anatomy to visualize and assess implant positioning and anatomic alignment and allows orthopaedic surgeons to visualize true C-arm distortion.

OrthoGrid’s new Drone delivery system improves ease of use for both surgeons and C-arm technologists, and greatly simplifies making fine-tune adjustments of the OrthoGrid Technology over the anatomy.
